Writing
Most of what I write here starts somewhere other than marketing, like a band logo or a Kurosawa film, and that's on purpose (mostly). After 25 years of leading creative teams I've come to think the stuff we file under culture is where the useful ideas about brands and people tend to come from, and these short essays are me trying to explain why. Earlier versions first ran on LinkedIn.
Don't Assume It's the Logo
What Metallica's logo history says about the brand refresh nobody actually needs.
What's Left Is Judgment
What photography did to painting, and what AI is doing to creative work.
Hire the Kikuchiyo
What a 1954 Kurosawa film says about hiring the person who doesn't fit.
Spend Time With the Ugly Stuff
John Waters, Comic Sans, and why good taste depends on understanding bad taste.
